Straight A’s for Southwest Florida Legislators

By: Christine Ross, MBA, MS, IOM, President & CEO, Bonita Springs Area Chamber of Commerce and Executive Director, Bonita Springs Estero Economic Development Council

This week I’d like to shine a light on a report that came out from the Florida Chamber of Commerce.  The 2015 Legislative Report Card grades and highlights how our Senators and Representative from Southwest Florida performed as it relates to showing a priority for a pro-job agenda.   It was very gratifying and I was proud to read that all thirteen of our legislators earned an “A” grade. They include:

  • Lizbeth Benacquisto
  • Nancy Detert
  • Bill Galvano
  • Garrett Richter
  • Matt Caldwell
  • Dane Eagle
  • Heather Fitzenhagen
  • Matt Hudson
  • Kathleen Passidomo
  • Cary Pigman
  • Ray Rodrigues
  • Ken Roberson
  • Carlos Trujillo

The report goes on to qualify the grade, noting that it is earned after tabulating more than 3,384 votes cast during both the regular and the special legislative sessions.  What this means to citizens and business owners is that our leadership understands what they as a collective body need to do to create a sustainable and diversified economy for Florida. It means they support lower business taxes and fees and understand the need for speed of permitting.  I would encourage every business owner who has not experienced the reality of a legislative session to make time to visit Tallahassee during the 2016 session.  Talk to the leaders about your needs, concerns, and even your wish list, for continuing the impressive improvement of the Florida business environment.  I can honestly tell you that it will make a difference to our Senators and Representatives.  These visits develop relationships that create understanding and advocacy that impacts legislative outcomes.  This is something you should consider to be an essential part of doing business.
