Last week I attended a phenomenal event about mixed-use development. The Mayor’s Symposium for Walkable Urban Communities featured speakers and panelists, all focused on making our community more walkable and bicycle friendly. The speakers highlighted areas like Downtown Fort Myers, Punta Gorda, and Downtown Bonita Springs, where redevelopment projects include walkable assets and amenities. When these communities are complete, residents will be able to go to work, go grocery shopping, and drop their kids off at school all without needing a car! This is a great solution for our area that continues to see population growth and more tourists and cars every year.
It was amazing to see eight of our Southwest Florida mayors all on one stage, focused on one issue: transportation. As our community continues to grow, we must remain focused on transportation and how to improve connectivity within our region. If you want to stay abreast of the latest updates in transportation, I invite you to sign up to receive our electronic newsletter, where we will be providing information to our members and the community about our efforts to champion transportation initiatives in our area. On a related front, our Chamber is currently encouraging the people who live and work in Bonita Springs to give their input in the Bonita Springs Evaluation & Appraisal Report Survey. This survey is put out by the City of Bonita Springs as they are working to evaluate the city’s comprehensive plan, a process that only occurs every ten years. It is so important that we as citizens give our input about the city’s future growth and development. Please let your voice be heard and take a few moments to complete the survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BonitaEAR.
