The Feeding Southwest Florida food drive held Saturday by Harry Chapin Food Bank and Publix Super Markets collected 92,647 pounds of food and $23,448 in donations to help feed people facing hunger in Southwest Florida.
The food drive was a partnership between the food bank and 62 Publix stores across Lee, Collier and Charlotte counties. We are grateful to Publix for making this food drive possible and for their continuing partnership in our mission to lead our community in the fight to end hunger.
The food and monetary donations collected will support Harry Chapin Food Bank programs that help feed the 1 in 8 people in Southwest Florida, including 1 in 5 children, who may not know where their next meal is coming from.
Publix customers showed their support by purchasing nonperishable food items to donate to the food bank while going about their weekly food shopping to feed themselves or their families. We thank them for their caring and helping us feed our neighbors in need.
“We are overwhelmed by the generosity of Publix in allowing us to hold this food drive at their stores and humbled by the community’s response,” said Richard LeBer, Harry Chapin Food Bank president and CEO. “Publix shoppers can be proud in the knowledge that their contributions will help put a meal on the table for the children, families, seniors, veterans and others we serve who struggle with hunger.”
“We’re thankful for our partnership with Harry Chapin Food Bank, excited for the fantastic support from our customers here in Southwest Florida. Their donations will make a huge impact to helping those in need,” said Brian West, Media and Community Relations Manager with Publix Super Markets.
About Harry Chapin Food Bank
Harry Chapin Food Bank, a member of Feeding America, is the largest hunger-relief organization in Southwest Florida. The food bank rescues food that would otherwise go to waste and distributes it to families and others in need through a series of programs that feed 28,000 people a week.
For every dollar donated, the food bank can provide $8 in food value. Harry Chapin Food Bank distributed $42.8 million worth of food in fiscal year 2019. Through our programs, we supplied nearly 26.7 million pounds of food and other grocery items, including 6.4 million pounds of fresh produce. The food is the equivalent of 22.2 million meals for people in need.
Our membership with Feeding America enables us to amplify our food and distribution efforts and bring in food from various retail and grocery stores, national food producers and distributors and growers locally, nationally and even internationally.
Harry Chapin Food Bank is proud to be named a Blueprint Partner by the Naples Children & Education Foundation (NCEF), the founding organization of the Naples Winter Wine Festival. Harry Chapin Food Bank is also a United Way partner agency. For more information or to make gift, call 239.334.7007 or visit harrychapinfoodbank.org.
